Palio di Siena
"July 2nd / August 16th"
Dating back to the mid 1600's, the modern day Palio is a rich, intricate cultural reality unique to Siena. The city of Siena is divided into 17 neighborhoods, or Contrade, 10 of which compete at a time in each of the two horse races held every summer on July 2nd and August 16th. This tour gives you the opportunity to experience this singular, magical event first hand, as none other does. Take in the unrivalled excitement of the Palio atmosphere, as you witness the blessing of one of the Contrada's horses in its neighborhood church. Follow the Historic Parade and wander through the streets charged with the sounds of neighborhood choruses and a sensation of timeless rivalry. Live the three laps around the main, Campo Square and the victory of the prized Palio (a hand painted banner) with thousands of other spectators from around the world and just down the street. Be on-hand and in waiting and overwhelmed.
Savor the aftermath, with dinner in the Campo Square, as you watch the stream of winners and losers and neutral enthusiasts flow by. The square resembles a stage at twilight; the perfect setting for the close of a perfect day.
